Chapter 3 Reflection

Before reading chapter 3 I did not know that there are five different types of context clues. These five types of context clues are: definition, synonym, example, contrast and inference. I want to know more about how contrast clues help you understand the meaning of a word. I learned from reading this chapter that example clues are the easiest for me to understand or clarify a word. I would like to know more about why inference clues are used to figure out the meaning of an unknown word.

Compulsive Gambling Reflection

Before reading this topic about compulsive gambling I did not know that gambling is the same as someone who is a drug addict. I want to know more about how people develop this gambling problem. I learned from reading this article that gambling occurs most with college students. Mainly because at the age of 18 you can buy lottery tickets, bet on sport games, play poker and even buy scratch off tickets. I would like to know more about why compulsive gambling on college campuses has become a big concern for college administrators.

Chapter 2 Reflection

Before reading this chapter I did not know that all college textbooks are written by college professors. I want to know more about how your textbook can be a valuable reference tool in your intended profession. I learned from reading this chapter that group projects are designed to help students learn from one another. Group projects take advantage of your strengths while helping you compensate for your weaknesses. They also bring a variety of perspectives to the task. I would like to know more about why photo graphs are used to spark interest and provide perspective. As well as draw out emotional response and why it gives students an opportunity to write, either formally or in writing journals.

Stop Asking Me My Major

Before reading about this topic I didn't realize that most parents do care about what their child wants to do after college. I want to know more about how students find out what interests them. I learned from reading this article is that when kids are told by their parents what they have to be they can cause their child to do poorly in school. One reason is that they would get bored of their major their parents tell them to follow. I would like to know more about why some people get hired in different jobs that are not relevant to their major.

Chapter 1 Reflection

Before reading this chapter I did not know that rereading a textbook chapter is actually one of the most poorest ways to review for a test. I want to know more about better studying habits and how to well on exams. I learned from reading this chapter that instructors often assign readings in a variety of sources including newspapers, references and library books and online sources. I would like to know more about why actively searching for key ideas while I read.
